Brian Funk’s free Ableton Live audio effect rack adds videotape-style character to existing sounds. Its controls cover pitch inconsistency, chorusing, saturation and compression. Funk says it can be used on individual tracks or the master channel, from subtle movement to a more damaged effect.
The rack targets the unstable playback associated with VCR tapes, but it processes audio inside Ableton Live rather than requiring you to record onto a physical VHS tape. Brian Funk’s walkthrough includes a demonstration with his Alpha Juno 2 and Super Tape Drums packs. Downloading the rack from Gumroad is free when you enter 0; donations are optional.
This is the route for an Ableton user who wants VCR-style movement on sounds they already have, not a new pack of VHS-recorded samples. Try it on a single track first, then decide whether the whole mix needs the same wear.
